Winter Plane Prep at LPA

It takes a lot of work to get our planes ready for a winter flight.
There's the ladder and fueling, wing covers, tail covers, engine cover, and plugging it in...
All done hours before you even check in.
Our pilots want you to be cozy though, so they head into the cold to make sure everything is just right.
Once the prop starts and the warm air flows through the cabin you'll almost feel like you're
sitting next to the perfect fireplace. Ahhhh! This is the way to travel!

Now sit back, relax, and enjoy your flight.
And from all of us - thanks so much for flying with Lake and Pen Air!

Lake Clark Pass is a Winter Wonderland

The weather has been a bit snowy recently and it's turned our Lake Clark Pass into a winter wonderland.
And we just love the colors and mood and beauty of it all!
Join us on a flight and see it for yourself!

Bush Flying 101: Flight Delays at LPA.

Flight delays caused by Weather or TFR's (Temporary Flight Restrictions) - like earlier this year when President Obama stopped by to walk on a glacier, and again when he was on his way to Dilingham - are out of Lake and Pen Air's control. They don't happen often but we've prepared a couple places for you to kick back and relax when they do.

If it's not pouring or freezing you might enjoy being outside!
Work on your tan, Instagram, or watch the flowers grow. If you'd like to water them, we'll let you!
If the weather outside isn't to your liking, spend time in our waiting room. We've got comfy leather couches, magazines, puzzles, hot coffee, and a large tv with way too many channels.
When your wait is particularly long, our bbq grill can be fired up for an impromptu lunch,
or yummy s'mores if Brian is working...
And if you're lucky enough to be here in June or July, you'll also get to enjoy the peonies!
See? Sometimes flight delays are awesome!

Alaska Adventure: The Beaver Pond Loop

So you're in Port Alsworth and you want to walk The Beaver Pond Loop? Great, you'll love it.
It's an easy two hour walk but clearly you'll want to bring a camera!
The trail is pretty easy to navigate and you will come across many beautiful views. If you're here in August you might find some delicious wild blueberries or cranberries to snack on along the way.
Be on the lookout for this relaxing bench just off the main trail. Kick back and listen to the birds,
watch the clouds roll by or soak up the sun. It's the perfect spot to enjoy some peace and quiet.

Chilly Turnagain Arm

The Turnagain Arm on the south side of Anchorage is privy to the worlds second largest tide! So no matter how chilly or down right frozen the rest of the state gets, the Turnagain Arm will not freeze.
However, if you fly over the powerful surging waters during the heart of a winter chill you will see giant ice boulders en masse and often causing log jams in the corners of the inlet, or being pushed right out of the ocean onto it's banks.

This, my friends, is not the time to be out on your paddle board - you will be crushed.

This is the time for a beautiful flight-tour! Fly with us around the inlet and take in the outstanding strength of the wild, untamable ocean. We do flight tours all year round so when you're ready for a beautiful scenery safari, give us a call: 907-345-2228

Bush Flying 101: Checking in for your flight at LPA

When you arrive at our Anchorage office for your flight, you'll see this sign...
Go left to enter our Freight Room. A staff member will weight your freight, mark it with a destination code, add your name, and if needed, add a FRAGILE, CHILL or FREEZE sticker.
Then your groceries and luggage will be carefully moved to our shelves, fridge or freezer for safe keeping until they're loaded on the aircraft.

LPA has a large in floor scale that accommodates our carts, bulky items,
and hundreds of pounds, so we're able to weigh and move your cargo efficiently.
Once you hand your freight over to a LPA staff member you can go to the office and finish checking in.

Then kick back and relax in our comfy waiting room, watch planes on the ramp and runway, watch tv, shop at the LPA store, read a magazine, tell the staff your best joke, or do a magic trick!
We just love that kind of stuff.

The skies and shores of Lake Clark...

...turn all kinds of beautiful in Autumn's setting sun.

The colors seem to magically and instantly change, as does the temperature once the sun sinks below the horizon. Come see and feel it for yourself.

Autumn in Lake Clark, Alaska

Autumn is a fairly short season for Lake Clark - around 5 weeks.

The leaves start fading from their brilliant, rich green about the first week or two of September and they're usually pretty much gone by mid-October. The temperatures are wonderful, and the views are colorful as passing clouds dump white snow on yellow mountains and then slowly cover up the slopes...
Then a warm jet stream will hover overhead and in a few hours the mountain is almost bare again.
Then quick as you can get a good nights rest it's covered right back up, plus a little extra.
The Lake Clark area has a lot of birch trees and their leaves turn a bright yellow that absolutely glows in the sun, especially towards evening when the warm light lingers and the shadows are long.
This is a spectacular time of year!

You might want to add a 'Port Alsworth Fall Visit' to your bucket list.
When you just can't stand to wait any longer, call us!
907-781-2228 or 907-345-2228.

Team Mascot

One goal at LPA is the art of teamwork. If everyone works as a team we are able to build up our business in communication and positivity… but enough about logistics, and on to the fun part.

If you have ever watched any type of sport you probably know all about Mascots. If you are a hermit and know nothing about sports or mascots, let me fill you in. They are the designated, ultimate supporters of their team. They usually wear outstanding outfits that draw the attention of the fans and can be seen doing all kinds of amazing feats to make sure the cheering never ends.

LPA may not be a sports team but we still have a mascot, and his name is Bones.

Every mascot needs an accomplice, and for Bones that is his best buddy (and cousin) Cub.
If you can't resist these two and their adorable smiles then come visit or fly with Lake and Pen as we are Unlocking Alaska!

New Staff!

We're so happy to introduce our newest team member - Josh!
He lived in Port Alsworth three years before moving this August to the big city of Anchorage. He'll be working part-time at our Merrill Field office while he takes aviation classes at UAA and builds his flying hours. He's a pilot, yo!

As a Ramp Dude he'll be weighing and loading your freight, fueling and cleaning the planes, and possibly doing snow removal this winter - unless we have a repeat of last year.

I know you'll enjoy getting to know Josh - he's a hard worker, has a great smile, plays the guitar and sings. And like most Alaskans, he loves exploring.

When Fall and Winter meet in Port Alsworth

The first morning you wake up to see your town's mountain tops dusted with snow is exhilarating!
Even if you know it's the start of 5 months of winter. It's just too beautiful to wish away.
It's been a little crazy around these parts:
Sept 21 - technically Summer.
Sept 22 - first day of Fall.
Sept 23 - Port Alsworth residents woke to their first sight of Winter...
This is the time of year for crisp mornings followed by warm afternoons. Who doesn't love that?!

News of snow capped mountains in September send people digging through their cupboards to make sure they have a healthy supply of hot chocolate. Then they usually head right out to soak up the views, get in one of the last kayak paddles of the year, hike Tanalian Mountain for a taste of freshly fallen snow, and take a few photos of the glowing yellow birch leaves before they all blow away.

What a delightful time of year!

Our Vie!

The US National Parks Centennial is a big deal! We just flew another adorable couple to the Lake Clark National Park, and the weather was perfect once again for amazing exploration.

Cess & Madison, and their adopted cat Vladimir Kitten (who wears a life vest when kayaking) are driving their camper van to as many US National Parks as possible, and flying to the rest.
They (Bradley Cooper & Goldilocks) chose to fly with Lake and Pen Air and we put them in our rocket - the Bonanza! It was a gorgeous flight making them ooh an ooh the whole way, and there was a fair amount of head swiveling and photo snapping as they enjoyed the incredible scenery.

Their stay in Port Alsworth ended a little earlier than planned when Cess hatcheted his ankle during their camping adventure up at Lake Kontrashabuna.
Still, they posted 8 amazing photos on their Instagram between Sept 3-7.
Check it out and follow along on their National Parks adventure if you get a chance.

Look with caution though or you'll likely be inspired to visit a National Park or two yourself.

A Summer Flight from Anchorage to Port Alsworth

Flying with Lake and Peninsula Airlines is memorable!
Besides the amazing customer service and the outstanding pilots, take a look at this view!

Anchorage Ramp on Merrill Field...
As you cross the Cook Inlet mud flats look for whales to the South,
or on a clear day like this Mt Denali to the North...
People love seeing the steaming Mt. Redoubt volcano...
All through the Lake Clark Mountain Pass you'll see huge swooping glaciers like this one...
And beautiful valley deltas flowing with melted snow from the surrounding mountains...
The stunning Little Lake Clark where mountains drop right into the tropical blue of the glacier fed lake...
This gorgeous place is just two minutes out of Port Alswoth, looking North over Lake Clark...
And here we are at the Port Alsworth Ramp!
What an unforgettable flight!
