What a view!

Lake & Pen Air is located in the perfect spot in Anchorage, Alaska! We have it all: unobstructed views of the Chugach Mountain Range, downtown, pink sunrises, and orange sunsets! It's quite spectacular!
Whatever time of year you happen to be visiting is the right time to take a tour of the most beautiful state! Or, just come have a cup of coffee with us and watch the planes take off and land.

02F

For some crazy reason - not one that makes sense - we have to take the entire caravan apart every 20,000 hours of engine time, then put it back together.
A process undoubtedly worth every. single. penny.

Our poor baby barely looks like a caravan right now...

B727

Today FedEx donated one of their B727's to the University of Alaska, Anchorage's flight training program here on Merrill Field.

The plane was so big that once it landed it would never be able to take off again - the runway is too short. The idea of such a plane landing here got quite a few folks all excited...

Dave designated the top of our office building was for "LPA employees only".
Our parking lot and cul-de-sac were quickly jammed with cars, and our ramp was flooded with people.
Brian leveled the top of our snow pile, then put chairs on top for people to relax on as they waited for the two fly-bys and the final landing. And he gave people rides to the chairs if they wanted.
This is one of the fly-by's. It swooped in close to the ground then shot up into the sky. On it's third approach it touched down, put on the breaks, and stopped before it had used up half of the runway!
Best lunch break entertainment to date.

Updating the Hangar & Pumps

Last winter a large column of ice built itself up the wall right next to that door down there. Then a large part of it toppled off the wall and onto a car, totaling it. Another chunk broke off and broke the window in the door.

We decided we didn't want a repeat of that this winter and have made some adjustments. We're hoping some fans inside along with a new sidewalk and awning will do the trick. Sure looks good!
Our fuel pumps, from the 1960's, have also been updated! They run faster, and that's super handy in the windy winter weather.

Beach Combing Alaska Style

On these cold winter days I think of all the fun yet to come this winter, but I can't help but think back on those nice warm summer days in Lake Clark National Park enjoying the coast and beach combing with the nephews. I think my best treasure was a nice fiberglass rowing paddle. As well as some treasured rocks that have gone into the collection.
Back to the grind for me filling the wood stove with dead spruce and cuddling up with a good book by the fire. Spring is around the corner!

Fuel Up!

So the long, desperate hope of a speedy fuel pump in our future has finally arrived.

The early announcement of a 4-6 week wait was doubled, but no use being grumpy about that now since.... it's here! And working! And we are able to pump fuel at an incredible rate. Happy New Year!
